New Delhi: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar who has been hogging limelight following the surgical strikes by Indian in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) crossed every mark today when he said that strikes were inspired by RSS ideology. This is going to be dissected by the media in the coming days, though the pliant media may tone down without much of an effort.
The media has failed to stand up to efforts to saffronize the state institutions in the country and Manohar Parikkar’s latest comment is a very calculated move in this direction. The people who are not taking the name of RSS behind the inspiration were talking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
There is no denying that despite reservations about promoting the PM instead of the Army, people were still appreciative of the strikes and a befitting reply to Pakistan following the Uri terrorist attacks. Nonetheless many people will not digest what the union defense minister is claiming.
The Defence Minister said that it was not possible that a Prime Minister from the land of Mahatma Gandhi and a Defence Minister from Goa with a common RSS orientation would not take such a strong decision, he said. The minister was addressing students and teachers of Nirma University here during a ‘Know Your Army’ programme.
He went on to add that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh teachings were at the back of the mind of the Prime Minister and him while ordering the surgical strikes on the terrorist launch pads. Parrikar said he and Modi were subjected to severe public criticism after the September 18 terror attack on the Indian Army camp in Uri.
Parikker said, “Both were targeted on the social media after 19 soldiers were killed in Uri and the media campaign continued till September 29 (when the Army conducted surgical strikes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir)”. “Now some people want evidence of the surgical strikes. These people will never accept the truth even if we provide them with concrete proof. “One thing is sure — no one can doubt the integrity and courage of the Indian Army,” he added.
He further said the surgical strikes achieved two things — the country became sensitive to national security; and secondly, the entire nation has rallied behind the Army. The minister said some ex-servicemen have even offered their services. “Such is the high morale of the men in uniform.” He said attacks on Indian security forces, as happened in Uri, were an ongoing feature for the last four to five years. But this was for the first time that India gave a befitting reply to the enemy, he added.
The media that went ballistic against Manmohan Singh, the Congress and the UPA government just over two years ago, has failed to stand up to such assertions that may have long term consequences for the nation as a whole. RSS ideology is divisive to the core and such assertions are damaging for national institutions. If it changes its anti-minorities and anti-Dalit policies, the opposition will subside in due course.
