Waqf money to be spent on welfare of Muslims alone: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
New Delhi: While attending the first meeting of the Central Waqf Council after taking complete control of the Union Ministry of Minorities Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said waqf money should be spent on Muslim community alone. He threatened the officials of the Central Waqf Council with dire consequences if his orders are not carried out in this regard.
The Minister of Minority Affairs and senior BJP leader Naqvi has also asked the Council to investigate the cases of corruption that have come to the notice in the last couple of years. He tasked senior waqf council official Jan Alam, who is the joint secretary in the Ministry of Minorities Affairs to carry out investigation. The official has been asked to investigate the corruption cases on priority basis and present his report at the earliest.
Meanwhile the minister also tried to change the contours of the four committees related to the Central Waqf Council. He has asked the constitution of a finance committee to keep tab on the budget and manage it in a better and professional way.
Till now the council held its meetings quarterly. Now the minister has suggested that the meetings be held every month or for that matter every one and half months. He has also ordered the council to post officers from one state into different states so the concerned official is able to work more independently and freely.
Naqvi also approved the demand to make the members of the council more powerful than the past. According to sources, the officials discussed all the relevant issues with the minister without any hesitation and Naqvi listened to all suggestions with utmost care and promised to take action on their suggestions.
“Mr Naqvi said that the slackness in the functioning of the council should be replaced by prompt action. He said that files should move fast and shouldn’t be kept in waiting for months and months. All the works should be done with urgency so things get complete in required time” a source said.
The minister said that all the proposals that come to the council for approval should be either cleared or denied and asked the speeding up of computerization of the council’s old files on war footings.
The minister was also apprized about the illegal occupation of waqf lands across the country. The minister said that all the illegally occupied waqf lands must be retaken and development work on such plots should be initiated immediately.
