Vinod Khanna who entered Bollywood as a villain, defied every logic to become one of the best actors in India’s Hindi cinema. And he proved his mettle at a time when it was the best time for Bollywood with a string of very successful actors vying for space.
There is no denying that the actor who passed away earlier today was a mercurial personality. At one time, in the midst of a thriving Bollywood career he left the film industry and went to the US where he worked as the personal gardener of Osho. It badly impacted his life forcing his wife, Geetanjali, who was his childhood sweetheart to decide to seek divorce.
He was also lucky. This was the reason that after several years of wilderness, when he tried to get back to his Bollywood career, he was overwhelmed with innumerable offers from top of the line producers.
This luck continued unabated even when he decided to enter politics. He not just won Lok Sabha election from Gurudaspur in Punjab, but also became a minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the center. Though he suffered a setback in the form on 2009 loss in the election, but he came back very strongly and won the election in 2014 Parliamentary election.
But more than politics, the actor will be remembered for his stellar role in a number of Hindi films. Vinod Khanna acted in lead roles in many superhit films and is best remembered for his performance in films like Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Gaddaar (1973 film), Jail Yatra, Imtihaan, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Inkaar, Kuchhe Dhaage, Amar Akbar Anthony, Rajput, Qurbani, Kudrat, Dayavan, Kaarnama,Suryaa: An Awakening and Jurm. Other than the above films, he acted in numerous other films.
Born on 6 October 1946, the actor received 2 Filmfare awards. Like most of the actors in sixties and seventies, he started from insignificant roles. After making his debut in 1968, Khanna first acted in small second lead roles or negative roles. His angry young man role in the superhit movie Mere Apne, his negative role as the main villain in the superhit movie Mera Gaon Mera Desh and his role in the crtically acclaimed movie Achanak as the military officer turned fugitive received tremendous applause from both- the film industry and his fans.
Vinod Khanna was married twice, once to his childhood sweetheart Geetanjali. But unluckily his decision to leave the country for Osho forced Geetanjali to take a tough decision of seeking divorce from him. They have two sons together Akshaye and Rahul Khanna, both of whom are well-known names in Hollywood today.
The actor married for the second time with Kavita in the year 1990 with who he has two children son Sakshi Khanna and daughter Shraddha Khanna. Vinod Khanna cause of death was bladder cancer.
