It is very common for Indian students to touch the feet of their teachers whenever they see them. It is rather very common for students during graduation ceremonies to do the same and seek the blessings of their gurus.
To be fair it is part of the culture in India. Many ministers can be seen touching the feet of the Prime Minister during the ceremonies to induct them as ministers. While in case of politicians we can think that they want to keep their bosses in good humor, but students touching the feet of their teachers is pure respect and nothing more.
While this is rather very common in India, just imagine how a teacher will react when a student does the same in US or a European country. Even in elementary schools, students call their teachers by their first name. No ‘sir’ or ‘madam’. Just and plain first name.
This may be the reason that the teacher reacted with such horror when his student touched his feet during his graduation ceremony.
The student, Gaurav Jhaveri, who studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago took his dean by surprise when he touched his feet during graduation ceremony in front of hundreds of other students, their parents and other faculty members of the university.
It was simply horror, writ large on the face of the teacher who thought there was something wrong with his feet. You need to see the video to believe it.

A report in ScoopHoop says, “While his mother would be beaming with pride seeing her son being ‘sanskaari’ in a foreign land, the Dean was certainly taken aback. In the video that has now gone viral, the Dean is seen looking puzzled at his feet and kept looking at Jhaveri wondering what just happened”.
