Destinee Mangum is all of 16 years. But the harrowing time she has seen makes her cry as she remembers as to what she had to endure.
The teen, who was travelling in a MAX train with a teenage Muslim girl when the two were threatened by a white supremacist who threw anti-Muslim slurs and threatened to kill them. While fellow passengers tried to save them, two people were stabbed to death while the third one was badly injured and remains in serious condition.
While Destinee Mangum and her Hijabi friend were saved by the three good Samaritans, the shock of what happened on the train is writ large on her face. How the two people lost their lives while saving them and the third is still in critical condition is always in her mind.
She hasn’t stopped crying since the train attack. With tears rolling down her cheeks the young girl thanked the three strangers who intervened on a Portland light-rail train after a man hurled anti-Muslim slurs at her and her friend who was wearing a hijab.
The white supremacist who reportedly stabbed the three has been identified as 35-year old Jeremy Joseph Christian.
In an emotion choked voice Magnum Destinee was quoted by KPTV as saying, “I just want to say thank you to the people who put their life on the line for me…Because they didn’t even know me and they lost their lives because of me and my friend and the way we look.”
The outrage that the incident caused finally forced President Donald Trump to condemn the incident in a tweet. “The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable. The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance. Our prayers are w/ them,” the President tweeted from his @POTUS account.
Magnum Destinee, while talking to the KPTV said that she and her friend were riding the MAX light rail Friday afternoon when Christian attacked them. He yelled at Mangum, who is not Muslim, and her friend, using what police described as “hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions.”
“He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia and he told us we shouldn’t be here, to get out of his country…He was just telling us that we basically weren’t anything and that we should just kill ourselves”, said she. She goes on to add that other people, unknown to them intervened on their behalf telling the man to shut up and saying that he “can’t disrespect these young ladies like that.”
