Merely a few weeks after American Airlines’ episode when a doctor was thrown out of a flight in Chicago, a similar incident has happened. Instead of American Airlines, the incident this time happened on a Delta Airlines flight.
A CNN report claims that Delta Airlines removed a family with very young children on its flight from Maui to LAX on April 23. The incident has taken more than two weeks to come into the limelight. It would have remained forgotten had a video footage not emerged and made its way first into social media and then into newsrooms across the US.
The unforgettable incident happened with Brian Schear’s family who belong to Huntington Beach, California. The entire family was removed from Delta Airlines’ flight 2222 from Maui to LAX. The entire incident was filmed by Brian Schear’s wife, Brittany Schear. She filmed the entire incident when a flight attendant demanded her husband to vacate one of their seats.
In the video footage doing the rounds on social media, the entire episode is very clear. Delta staff asked Brian Schear to give up a seat he had purchased. A Delta attendant can be seen arguing with the family and asking them to carry the child in their lap. After arguing with the airline, they were threatened with jail.
Brian Schear can be seen asking “You’re saying you’re gonna give that away to someone else when I paid for that seat? That’s not right”.
It should be kept in mind that Brian had booked the seat for his 18-year old son. But he sent him by another flight and then put his two year old child in the seat. Another airline employee tells the family that under FAA regulations, 2-year-old children are not allowed to have their own seat.
The Delta Airlines recommends passengers to book a separate seat for kids younger than two years. Brian says this is the reason that he sent the elder son by a different flight so that he could put the younger one in a separate seat. After being threatened with jail by the airline employees, the couple decides to voluntarily leave the flight. According to ABC 7 Los Angeles, “That was around midnight, and the couple and their two toddlers were left having to scramble for a hotel room and pay $2,000 for another flight the next day, on United.”
In the meantime, after the video went viral Delta has approached the family and released a statement expressing regret. “We’re sorry for what this family experienced. Our team has reached out and will be talking with them to better understand what happened and come to a resolution” Delta Airlines statement said.
