Well-known actor who s also known for his rather exceptional singing, Tom Wopat, has reportedly been arrested for indecent sex assault and battery. There are also reports that cocaine was also found in his possession at the time of arrest.
A TMZ report that broke the news claims that the victim was reportedly part of the production. The incident assault allegedly took place in Massachusetts.
In the meantime, a press release from the Waltham Police Department said that the actor was taken into custody and charged with Indecent Assault and Battery on a Person Over 14. There are also reports that two bags of “white powder” thought to be cocaine were also discovered. So along with indecent behavior charges, he was also charged with Possession of a Class B Substance (Cocaine).
The 65-year old actor first achieved fame as Lucas K. “Luke” Duke on the long-running television action/comedy series, The Dukes of Hazzard. Since then, Wopat has worked regularly, most often on the stage in musicals and in supporting television and movie roles. He was a semi-regular guest on the 1990s comedy series Cybill, and had a small role as U.S. Marshal Gil Tatum in Django Unchained (2012). Wopat also has a recurring role as Sheriff Jim Wilkins on the television series Longmire. Additionally, Wopat has recorded several albums of country songs and pop standards, scoring a series of moderately successful singles in the 1980s and 1990s.
The TMZ report, while detailing the incident says, “Wopat was in Waltham, Mass starring in a play — a production of “42nd Street.” We’re told the alleged victim is a woman connected with the production, and the incident involved Wopat allegedly putting his hands down her pants”.
The case can actually keep the actor in jail for around two and half years. In Massachusetts, an indecent assault and battery conviction can result in a prison sentence of two and a half years or less in a jail or house of correction or no more than five years in a state prison. This is a rather serious crime in the state and the actor faces a tough time in the coming days.
