Renowned singer and musician, Tom Petty, has died. The reports of his death were doing the rounds for the last two days. First it were the police who had prematurely announced his death and later, it was leading cable network CBSNews that reported the singer and song writer’s death.
But while he was not dead as different news sources scurried to get to the truth, he was extremely unwell and succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest on October 2. A report in TMZ says that the singer died and mentioned Tom Petty cause of death as cardiac arrest.
His manager in a statement confirmed the news of the top billed singer’s death saying, “On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
Reports suggest that the Los Angeles Police Department never issued any report about the Tom Petty’s death. When the CBSNews reported the news of his death, LAPD denied the report through a tweet. “The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly provided to some media sources”, the LAPD’s Twitter handle said.
Tom Petty’s full name was Thomas Earl Petty. But most of the people remember him as Tom Petty. The singer was best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but was also a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch. It is no secret that Tom Petty recorded a large number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which are mainstays on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music has been classified as rock and roll, heartland rock, and even stoner rock.
The sort of acceptability that he received is received by merely very few artists. Reports suggest that till now he sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
A TMZ report says that the singer was at his Malibu home on Sunday when he went into full cardiac arrest. The entertainment blog says that the emergency personnel were called, but when they arrived to the home, Petty was unconscious. Although he was not breathing, law enforcement officials said that EMTs were able to get a pulse on him.
TMZ report goes on to add that the singer was rushed to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. TMZ report further says that Tom Petty was taken off a life support this morning as he hadn’t been showing any brain activity. The site confirms that the family has a “do not resuscitate” order on Petty, which was likely the reason that he was removed from the ventilator today.
His and Jane Benyo’s marriage seems to be the case of the love at first sight. Petty married Jane Benyo in 1974, and the two divorced in 1996. Benyo disclosed to Stevie Nicks that she met Petty at “the age of seventeen.” Petty and Benyo had two daughters; Adria is a director and AnnaKim is an artist. Petty married Dana York Epperson on June 3, 2001, and he had a stepson, Dylan, from York’s earlier marriage. Meanwhile Tom Petty rest in peace is going viral on social media.
