Chuck Berry’s death has spread a pall of gloom across the world. The man who gave shape to rock n roll music died in a very bad shape where no was there to take care of him.
If you want to know his importance in the world of music, I should remind you here what John Lennon, the renowned English singer, songwriter and co-founder of the Beatles said, “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry”.
Wife had huge impact over his personality
Chuck Berry and his wife Themetta were married for close to seventy years. The two were married since 1948 and the singer and songwriter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Themetta “Toddy” Suggs and their four children, a son and three daughters.
The two seem to have grown together. Before getting married, Berry was imprisoned for robbery at three shops and carjacking. He has written extensively about the whole incident in his autobiography. Nonetheless it was not his last stint in the jail. Many people will be amazed to know that at the time of marriage he worked as a janitor at a Fisher Body auto assembly plant. Berry’s marriage with his wife survived the ups and downs of his professional music career not it impacted as he crossed one milestone of professional fame after the other.
Rock and roll music and ‘incompatible’ family man image
Chuck Berry’s roll n rock music fame and his being a family man looked rather incompatible to many. A CNN report says, “In many respects, he was an unlikely rock ‘n’ roller. He was in his 30s and a family man in a business that celebrated youth and individualism. And “rock ‘n’ roll” still carried a taint of the disreputable among older folks…But Berry — who always kept a shrewd eye on the bottom line — wasn’t writing for himself…”Everything I wrote about wasn’t about me, but about the people listening,” he said”.
If you wanted to know about the love that kept them together for 68 year, you should read his biography. “Brown Eyed Handsome Man: The Life and Hard Times of Chuck Berry” quotes both Chuck Berry and Suggs talking about each other. “We have had a wonderful marriage,” Themetta was quoted as saying after the couple had already passed their 38th anniversary mark. “We love each other as much as we did the day we met.” The two have four children togethr including son Charles Berry Jr. and three daughters including Ingrid Berry, Aloha Berry.
