Aligarh: So the name of the new Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice chancellor has been announced. For the academic circles in the biggest Muslim educational institution in India, which is among the country’s top universities, the news will be celebrated as an academic has been appointed its VC. Tariq Mansoor, the principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) is the new AMU VC.
General Zameer Shah who is the outgoing VC is a former army general. While he improved the security atmosphere in the sprawling AMU campus, many people rue that the academic environment took a big hit in the university.
An Indian Express report suggests that Professor Mansoor has been selected from a list of three names that the university’s court had sent to the Union Human Resource Development ministry two months ago. Now the President Pranab Mukherjee has confirmed the appointment of the well-revered JNMC professor.
Mansoor comes with academic distinction and rather very long experience. Prof. Tariq Mansoor is presently serving as the Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, J.N. Medical College and Hospital, AMU since September 2013. He is also the member of Medical Council of India since March 2015. He did his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh. A surgeon by profession with special interest in Breast and Thyroid Diseases, Prof. Tariq Mansoor has 33 years of Teaching and 35 years of Clinical experience. Served as Chairman, Department of Surgery, J.N. Medical College from 2006-2009 and has 90 publications to his credit in various National and International Journals of repute. He has guided 47 Postgraduate Medical Students for their Thesis as Supervisor/Co-Supervisor.
An intro of Mansoor on JNMC website says, “Prof. Tariq Mansoor has the distinction of having been an elected member of the Executive Council, Aligarh Muslim University representing the Teaching faculty for three terms for a total of nine years. Presently he is serving as member, Executive Council, AMU in his capacity as Principal, JNMC. He has been the President of the Association of Surgeons of India, UPASI from 2010-2011 and Honorary Secretary, AMU Teachers Association from 1997-1999”.
It should be kept in mind that Prof. Mansoor was selected from a list of three names that the university’s court had sent to the Union Human Resource Development ministry two months ago. Abu Saleh Sharif, executive director and chief scholar, US-India Policy Institute, Washington, and Shahid Jameel, CEO, Welcome Trust and DBT India Alliance were the other two contenders.
