Washington DC: Barrack Obama is said to be a dotting husband. His eight year stint in White House was without a single controversy. He came spotless despite many of his opponents praying that he makes a mistake, make some blunder like Bill Clinton did while in office and get dragged to the court and better still out of White House. But alas, they didn’t get a single opportunity of the sort.
He was rather very young when he entered White House and still young when he vacated the iconic White House on 20th January this year. But his opponents couldn’t find a black spot on his personality. It is notwithstanding the fact that they still attacked him alleging to be a Muslim, an alien saying he was not born in the US and attacking him for his numerous policies that eventually improved the US economy.
While Barack Obama might still be a dotting husband, a latest book claims that it was not always Michelle Obama in his life. She hasn’t been the only woman in his life, says a new biography. The lady love had smiled at him before he bumped into Michelle Obama in 1989. In his new book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer David J. Garrow comes up with many unheard of details about former President barrack Obama and his life before he entered the public life.
Garrow says that Obama as a twenty something had a White girlfriend who is now a professor in a well-known college in the US. Garrow came into contact with one of his ex-girlfriends, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, who lived with Obama. He says that Obama proposed to her twice and wanted to marry her, but she didn’t relent, apparently under the pressure from her parents, who thought that she was far too young for marriage at just 23 years of age.
Garrow says Obama met Jager several years before he bumped into Michelle Obama. It was probably in mid-eighties while doing community organizing in Chicago, and lived with her in his early 20s. “In the winter of ‘86, when we visited my parents, he asked me to marry him.” 53-year old Jager told the author.
He says the affair lasted several years and goes on to add that Obama even continued to see her despite being initially involved with Michelle Obama. She says that it was towards the end of eighties when Obamam became over-ambitious. “He became. . . so very ambitious, very suddenly… I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president” said she.
The middle-aged Jager says that Obama proposed to her a second time while leaving for Harvard Law School. He even asked her to settle down with him in Cambridge, but she chose to follow through with her planned research trip to Seoul.
Jager teaches at Oberlin College where she is an associate professor and the program director of East Asian Studies. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1994, and entered teaching later. She is the author of ‘Brothers at War: The Unending Conflict in Korea’.
As Obama met another fellow law graduate, Jager married an academic. She is married to historian Jiyul Kim, who specializes in East Asia, Cold War, and US foreign policy. In 2012, Kim began working as a visiting assistant professor at Oberlin (where Jager teaches), where he taught “History and the Formulation of US National Security Policy and Strategy”, “Theory and History of War”, and “War and Civilization.” Kim served with the US Army for nearly 30 years, with assignments in US, Germany, Korea, and Japan.
