Savanna Lafontaine-Greywind autopsy underway, vigil being held- Suspects admit child was hers

ViewsHeadlines Desk,

A couple suspected of having killed a 22-year old North Dakota woman and stealing her baby, have reportedly admitted of taking the woman’s baby. After several days’ search the woman’s body was taken out from a river after kayakers saw a suspicious looking packet wrapped in plastic floating there.

Police have said they have identified the body of missing woman Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind. In the meantime, two people living in her neighborhood have been charged with not just stealing the young woman’s newborn baby, but also killing her and dumping her body in the river.

Brooke Lynn Crews, 38, and her boyfriend William Henry Hoehn, 32, have been arrested and charged in the death Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, who was 8 months pregnant when she went missing on August 19. They tried to mislead sleuths and claimed that the child was their own.

The police got suspicious about the couple when they gave very different statement about how the baby came into their possession. Crews told police she arranged to have Greywind come to her apartment so she could teach her how to induce labor, according to the Duluth News Tribune. She did so, Crews said, and Greywind later returned with the newborn to give it to her.

On the contrary, her boyfriend told the police that when he came back home on 19th August he found Crews cleaning up blood. Crews then showed him the newborn baby and said, “This is our baby, this is our family”.

Notwithstanding the fact that the charges have been filed against the couple, it doesn’t shed any light on Savanna Greywind died. Police Chief David Todd said that the woman’s body was discovered floating in the river, packed in plastic. Fargo Police Department Facebook page mentions Savannah’s name as Savanna Marie Greywind.

While talking about the chain of event, Fargo Police Department’s Facebook page says, “At approximately 4:30 pm on Saturday, August 19th, the family of 22 year-old Fargo resident Savanna Marie Greywind, reported her as a missing person. Savanna was reported to be 8 months pregnant. She was last seen at about 1:30 pm…Savanna had went to a neighboring apartment to assist her neighbor with a sewing project. That apartment is in the same building in which Savanna resides…The tenants of the apartment she visited are 38 year-old Brooke Lynn Crews and 32 year-old William Henry Hoehn. They live at 2825 9th St. N. apartment #5 in Fargo…In the initial missing person’s investigation, interviews were conducted with Crews and Hoehn and no leads were developed. Crews indicated that Savanna had left the apartment after helping her with the sewing project”.

Complaint says that “Crews admitted she had taken advantage of Savanna Greywind in an attempt to obtain her child and possibly keep the child as her own,” the complaint stated. While both suspects admitted the baby belonged to Greywind, police said they were waiting on the results of DNA testing to say so with certainty.

The two are being held on $2 million bail and have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and giving false information to police. “We will continue to pursue justice for Savanna,” Fargo Police Chief David Todd said in a press conference Monday. “Savanna was a victim of a cruel and vicious act of depravity.” Police have yet to reveal Greywind’s cause of death and an autopsy is underway to determine the details.

In the meantime more details are coming out preceding her disappearance. Her mother Norberta LaFontaine-Greywind, has been quoted by media as saying that her daughter had texted her to say she was heading to the neighbor’s apartment to help model a dress for a fitting. She says that when she went to the couple and enquired about her daughter, she was told the woman had already left.

Her mother says, “I immediately knew something was wrong because her care is here…She’s eight months pregnant. Her feet were swollen, so she wouldn’t have taken up walking like that. There was pizza here and she hadn’t eaten. She would not just leave that lady’s apartment and go somewhere.”
