Chennai: Sasikala Natarajan emerged victorious despite being put behind high prison walls. She was able to not just beat her adversaries and long term opponents, her chosen candidate was able to prove his majority in the house despite all the challenges of the opposition DMK and the rebel Panneerselvam and his band of supporters.
The extent to which the opposition was ready to go to stall the floor test can be gauged by the fact that the DMK members went on the rampage in the house. They even attacked Speaker who was luckily saved by marshals who take care of the security within the house.
His mike was snatched, shirt torn and files destroyed by the DMK MLAs who were led by their leader MK Stalin, who took a very aggressive posture yesterday. Sasikala must be commended for managing everything in a very foolproof manner despite being in far away Bangalore incarcerated in a prison cell.
Reports suggest that Sasikala was keeping a close watch on what was happening in Secretariat in Chennai. When Planiswami won the vote of confidence after all violence and drama, she congratulated him over the phone and also held discussions with cabinet members. The AIADMK general secretary has been sent to the jail by the Supreme Court that had upheld her conviction in a disproportionate assets case.
The longtime Jayalalithaa friend and confidante, Sasikala, and her niece J Ilavarasi are lodged in the women’s barrack on the first floor of the building. Since there’s no TV in her cell at present, she requested jail authorities to let her go to another room.
A leading newspaper while describing her activity in jail yesterday said, “On Thursday night, Sasikala had requested senior jail officials to allow her to watch TV in another room so that she could watch the proceedings…After Palaniswamy passed the test, Sasikala appeared happy. She walked back her to room, freshened up and came down to admission room where the legal team was waiting for her”.
Sasikala was introduced to former chief minister jayalalithaa more than four decades ago. After the death of Jayalalithaa’s political mentor MGR in 1987, Sasikala is said to have offered emotional support to Jayalalithaa. In 1989, she moved into the late chief minister’s residence at Poes Garden and is reported to have got 40 domestic helps with her from her hometown.
Regarding Sasikala Natarajan educational qualification, reports suggest that she completed graduate from her home town. Sasikala’s choice of Edappadi K. Palanisamy, from the Gounder community, to be chief minister and Dinakaran’s promotion signalled that the powerful southern party would still be controlled by Thevars with the Gounders next in line. As far as Sasikala natarajan caste is concerned, both Sasikala and former chief minister O. Panneerselvam are Thevars. The Thevars and the Gounders are the two main dominant castes that have influenced the AIADMK over the years in Tamil Nadu, where the assertion of intermediary castes has been the crucial factor during elections.
