Chennai: While his party seems to have a neutral stance towards VK Sasikalam, the Chief Minister in waiting of Tamil Nadu, senior Congress leader P Chidambram seems to have a diametrically opposite view. He seems to be supporting O Panneerselvan who is trying to grab power with the support of opposition DMK.
Former Finance Minister P Chidambram seems to have a completely opposite view on Sasikala and Panneerselvam.
While legal experts have said that Government is duty bound to invite the legislature party leader of the largest party, Chidambram has been insisting that the Governor has other options.
O Panneerselvam, in the meantime has been asserting with obvious support from Delhi and opposition DMK. He has also issued a notification announcing turning Sasikala and formerly Jayalalithaa’s Pose Garden residence into a memorial for Jayalalithaa.
On the other hand Chidambaram has said that Governor Vidyasagar Rao could exercise a “window of discretion” to delay the swearing in of the leader elected by the ruling party’s legislative group.
While talking about the current crisis, he said, “I have no comment on the internal process of the AIADMK. It is the right of the party’s MLAs to elect a leader. But once a leader is elected and projected as chief minister, it is the right of the people of Tamil Nadu to ask if that leader deserves to be chief minister…It is our right to ask whether the AIADMK could not have chosen a better leader, than whoever they have elected”.
He told the Hindu, “That question, of whether the right choice has been made, that people are asking, on social media and elsewhere, is gaining traction because of the peculiar circumstances in which the AIADMK finds itself today. Therefore, I think there is a disconnect between the AIADMK MLAs and its rank and file, the party’s leaders and the people of Tamil Nadu. This disconnect will not be resolved by OPS being replaced by another person, it will only widen”.
