Salt Lake City shooting and the subsequent death of a woman and her young son has socked the residents. While the mother and one of her sons were killed on the spot, another son of the woman remains in critical condition after receiving gunshot wounds. Another girl, travelling with the family also received injuries. But her injuries are reportedly of not serious condition.
Later, the suspect who had sprayed bullets at the woman and her children, travelling in a car, was also found dead. Authorities claim that the man apparently died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Authorities later identified the man and said that the shooting suspect was allegedly in a relationship with the dead woman but was not the father of her sons.
The mother of the children, who died on the spot was not driving the vehicle. Authorities claim that the car was being driven by another woman. Authorities told the media that the woman had actually picked up the female victim and her two sons to give them a ride “out of the area” moments before the attack as they walked alongside a road in the city of Sandy.
Officials claim that the woman who lost her life in the mindless shooting with her sons had just come out of the boys’ elementary school after the end of school when the events unfolded.
Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen, while talking about the investigation in the case said that a short while after being picked up by the woman in her car, the suspect used his car to repeatedly ram the woman’s vehicle. Then he got out and opened fire before shooting himself.
Another woman, Tracy Finau, who saw the entire incident was quoted by the KUTV as saying that the man blocked the woman’s car before opening fire. “He walked out of his car, went to his passenger side, pulled out a handgun and walked toward the [woman’s] car and shot the window out,” Finau said.
The other son of the victim, a fifth-grader who had been walking on the road, was in critical but stable condition, authorities said. He had reconstructive surgery on his jaw, Haney told KUTV, and will have to have at least one more surgery.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Jeremy Patterson, 32. He had been in a relationship with the woman who was killed, 39-year-old Memorez Rackley, police said in a statement that did not disclose details about a possible motive. Rackley was married to another man but Nielsen did not provide more details. Authorities also did not identify the female driver or her daughter.
