ViewsHeadlines Desk,

Robert Grays’ death following a neck injury during a match has shocked the entire sporting world in the US. The 19 year old Midwestern State cornerback suffered neck injury merely minutes before the end of Mustangs vs Texas A&M-Kingsville game.

The Division II football player reportedly suffered a fatal neck injury while making a tackle in a game Saturday.

Reports suggest that almost three minutes were left to end the match when Gray suffered the life threatening injury in his neck. Initially the injury didn’t look that serious, but pretty soon it became apparent that it was a serious injury. Grays was reportedly hospitalized in Wichita Falls, Texas on Saturday night before being flown to a hospital in Houston, where he died Tuesday.

MSU president Suzanne Shipley said in a statement said, “[Wednesday] we mourn the loss of one of our own. Robert Grays died yesterday from critical injuries suffered in Saturday’s game…I know you will join me in expressing the sincerest condolences of the MSU community to Robert’s family and friends. Please keep them in your thoughts in the coming days.

Shipley went on to add, “Robert touched many lives while attending the university, but perhaps he will be remembered best for his smile. He was an inspiration on and off the field to those around him, and he will be remembered with love and affection by his friends, classmates, coaches and teammates.”

Reports suggest that the 19-year old was a sophomore from Houston who was majoring in business, according to his bio on the Mustangs’ website. He had 24 tackles for the team with two passes defended as a freshman and had 10 tackles in this year’s season.

His teammate Bryce Martinez was quoted by the Wichita Falls Times-Record News as saying “We both played last year as true freshmen and we always told each other we were going to make it…And we still are. The other night when I went to go see him, he wasn’t looking too good, but then I looked at him and it just felt like he’s going to make it, I just saw it. People think it’s going to take a miracle … Rob is a miracle and the things he would do are miraculous. He’s the strongest dude I know, the smallest dude I know and the biggest heart I know.”
