Quebec City: Five people, all of them Muslims, have reportedly been killed at a Quebec City mosque. Reports suggest that a large number of worshippers, who were in the mosque for the evening prayers, were also injured during the dance macabre.
Officials of the mosques have said that right now they don’t have the details about the number and the extent of their injuries as they have been taken to different cities across the city.
Quebec City is the seventh largest city and Canada and has a vibrant, though small Muslim community.
Leading news agency, Reuters, while quoting an eyewitness said that as many as three gunmen were involved in the killing of innocent Muslims in the mosque. Reuters report said that the attackers fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center.
In the meantime Canada’s public safety minister, Ralph Goodale, said on Twitter that he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and injuries. “There are many victims … there are deaths,” a Quebec police spokesman told reporters. Two people have been arrested, police said.
The Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center president Mohamed Yangui said, “Why is this happening here? This is barbaric”. Yangui, who was not inside the mosque during the shooting, received frantic calls from worshippers at evening prayers. He did not know how many were injured, saying they had been taken to different hospitals across Quebec City.
Expressing outrage over the attack and the deaths, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter: “Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families.”
