Will Cristiano Ronaldo carry Portugal on his shoulders to success in today’s match against Mexico? While many are asking this questions there are a large number of soccer fans who believe that the top Real Madrid player will be able to carry his national side not just in today’s match against Mexico, but against all other teams in the tournament and win the final for his side.
While this may be a long shot right now, the European champions are banking on not just the star power of Cristiano Ronaldo, but also his experience to score and win matches. Ronaldo has been outperforming himself in recent weeks and months and the way he has taken Real Madrid to great heights, the Portuguese fans can be excused in believing that he will deliver them the trophy.
It must be kept in mind that Portugal’s longtime captain Cristiano Ronaldo is the reigning winner of the Ballon d’Or and led his club Real Madrid to Spain’s top-flight La Liga championship and the Champions League title.
But he is not without challenge. Mexico come with their own star, though certainly not as big as Ronaldo. Mexico’s Javier Hernandez, better known as “Chicharito” became his country’s all-time leading scorer last month and comes into the tournament with 47 goals. Mexico is making its sixth appearance in the tournament while Portugal is making its debut. The two teams have met just twice, with Portugal winning both times.
