Kolkata: Known for his controversial statements, and having recently issued a fatwa against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for demonetization, Maulana Nurur Rahman Barkati has again come to the spotlight for rubbing the Tipu Sultan Masjid Waqf State Committee the wrong way.
The Waqf State of Ghulam Muhammad, chairperson of Shaheed Tipu Sultan Committee has issued a notice against him to abdicate the post of Imam in the mosque and has accused him of unlawfully harming the religion by using his post to air his political beliefs.
Maulana has reacted by debunking the accusations and notice. He accused the committee of following the lead of RSS, BJP and CPM and has declared that his statements are and will always be for the welfare of the Muslim beliefs.
He has expressed view that the notice is retaliation from the committee because his statements expose the people’s discontent with the committee. (Inquilab)
The imam of Kolkata’s historic Tipu Sultan Masjid who is very close to West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee accused the PM of cheating people through notebandi. According to the complaint filed by BJP, Shahi Imam has issued a fatwa “offering a reward of Rs 25 lakh for anyone who will cut Prime Minister’s beard, shave his head and smear him with black ink.”
He was criticised for the comment by many Muslim leaders. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s Khalida Parveen while condemning the fatwa against PM Modi said, “Why this political imam is defaming the Muslim community of india by his fatwa?” (Translated from UrduTimes)
