CESENA, Italy – Former MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden’s death has shocked the motor racing world. The 35-year old American motor-cycle racer died in hospital on Monday, a few days after being hit by a car.
Reports suggest that a car hit the champion racer while he was training in Cesena, Italy. For five days he struggled, but succumbed to fatal injuries he sustained from the car hitting his bike.
While his injuries were serious, but everyone was hoping that he will survive the crash and get back to driving his bikes in the same fearless manner, he is famous for. An ESPN report says that the racer was undergoing treatment at Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where Hayden had been since the collision last Wednesday.
The American racer had suffered severe cerebral damage and multiple traumatic injuries. The hospital in a statement said, “The medical team has verified the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who has been undergoing care since last Wednesday May 17 in the intensive care unit of the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena following a very serious polytrauma which occurred the same day”.
Nicholas “Nicky” Patrick Hayden was among the most feted racer. Hayden started his road racing career in the CMRA before progressing to the AMA Supersport Championship and then to the AMA Superbike Championship. He won the AMA title in 2002 and was approached by the Repsol Honda team to race for them in MotoGP. In his first season he performed well, finishing fifth in the championship and winning the Rookie-of-the-year award. However, this was followed by a difficult second season in which he could only manage eighth overall. Hayden then rallied in the 2005 season by scoring his first Grand Prix win at Laguna Seca, and finishing third in the standings at the end of the season. The next year, 2006, would be Hayden’s greatest in motorcycle racing as he won the 2006 MotoGP world title, breaking Valentino Rossi’s five year consecutive streak.
