Nick Philippoussis, father of Mark Philippoussis has reportedly been arrested on child molestation charges. He is being held for $2.5 million bail.
Latest reports claim that the father of Mark Philippoussis has been arrested in San Diego on charges of child molestation. The 68-year old Nikolaos Philippoussis is not unknown in tennis circles and has been looking after everything regarding his son. To be true Mark Philippoussis has credited him with his success.
San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in a press release said that the 68-year old man is being accused of molesting two minors who were taking tennis lessons at his California home.
The father-son duo has been living in San Diego for a very long time now. 41-year old Mark Anthony Philippoussis is an Australian retired tennis player of Greek and Italian descent. He turned professional in 1994.
While he couldn’t find much success on international level, at one point of time he was thought to be a rising tennis star. He is credited with two Davis Cup titles with Australia in 1999 and 2003, winning the deciding rubber in the final of each. He also reached the finals of the 1998 US Open and the 2003 Wimbledon tournaments, losing to countryman Pat Rafter and Swiss Roger Federer respectively. He reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 8. Besides tennis, the Australian national has had a minor career in modelling and starred in the American reality television dating show Age of Love. He is nicknamed ‘the Scud’, after the Scud missile.
Reports suggest that the elder Philippoussis was taken into custody by San Diego County Sheriff’s Department detectives Tuesday, July 25, at his home in Mira Mesa, the department said in a press release. Philippoussis’ arrest came after an investigation by the department’s Child Abuse Unit.
Detectives of the San Diego police claim that the elder Philippoussis is accused of “multiple counts of lewd and lascivious acts with two minor victims. Philippoussis works as a personal tennis coach in Northern San Diego County and the alleged molestation victims took tennis lessons from him.”
There is no denying that the charges against him are serious and he may have to spend long years behind prison walls if detectives are able to prove their accusations. He has been charged with sexual intercourse/sodomy with a child 10 years or younger, three counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and oral copulation with a person under 18.
If the charges are proved in the court of law, the man faces 25 years to life if convicted of the sexual intercourse charge, and up to 10 years in prison on each of the lewd and lascivious conduct charges.
