Was the teenaged girl brutally killed on Sunday in Virginia raped before being murdered? A report claims that police are investigating if 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen who was coming to the mosque for prayers was sexually assaulted before being killed and her body thrown into a pond.
The 17-year old Muslim teenager who went missing from a Virginia mosque was found dead and her body thrown in a pond in Loudoun County, Virginia, on Sunday afternoon. The young girl, who had gone to offer prayers during the Muslims’ holy month of Ramadan was fasting throughout the month. From the mosque, she had gone to a McDonald’s restaurant close-by to eat suhoor before beginning the mandatory fast that every adult Muslim has to observe in the entire month. But instead of being able to offer prayers, the young girl was attacked and abducted, a few miles from where police said Darwin Martinez Torres, an undocumented immigrant, allegedly chased and attacked her and about 15 other teenagers after a road rage incident.
Reports suggest that Nabra Hassanen was walking with her friends near the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center about 4 a.m. on Sunday after Ramadan prayers when the group allegedly got into some kind of dispute with Martinez Torres, who reportedly drove past in a car. The friends told authorities that Torres then exited his car, brandishing a baseball bat. The teens scattered when he allegedly attacked Hassanen. Once the friends regrouped at the religious center, mosque officials contacted police. Authorities claim that 22-year old Torres got out of his car wielding a baseball bat, struck Hassanen, kidnapped her, and killed her before dumping her body. Autopsy results show Hassanen suffered from blunt force trauma to the upper body.
A report in the BuzzFeed news claim that Loudoun County Sheriff is all set to take over the investigation, which would include rape, said Officer Tawny Wright. Reports claim that the teenager was a sophomore at South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia. Principal Kim Retzer, in a message told parents, via Reston Now: “It’s believed that the missing teen is one of our students and while we await further news about this very sad incident, I would also ask that you refrain from engaging in rumor and speculation on social media about today’s events…I wanted you to be aware of these developments and to inform you that we will have crisis counselors at the school beginning tomorrow morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family”.
Hassnen also reportedly worked at a McDonald’s in Reston, Virginia. A coworker, Usman Anwar Khan, told Buzzfeed that Nabra “was a really nice girl” who “always talked with a smile.” American Muslims’ leading organization, Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) said that it is mourning the loss of Nabra Hassanen who was kidnapped and murdered while walking back to the mosque from having suhoor, the morning Ramadan meal, with a group of friends
While officials have said that there was no hate crime angle involved in her murder, her parents have said that she was singled out and killed for how she dressed. She was reportedly wearing an abaya that she had loaned from her mother who said she was not of a religious type of girl. The teenager’s grieving mother Sawsan Gazzar said her daughter had borrowed an abaya from her to wear to Ramadan services at the mosque on Saturday night, as she “wasn’t ordinarily religiously observant”. When asked why she might have been targeted, her mother said, “I think it had to do with the way she was dressed and the fact that she’s Muslim…Why would you kill a kid? What did my daughter do to deserve this?”
