Malappuram: The Indian Union Muslim League has won the Malappuram Lok Sabha seat by a huge margin. The League’s president and its candidate from the predominantly Muslim seat, PK Kunhalikutty, defeated his nearest rival by over 1.7 lakh votes. The seat fell vacant due to the death of E Ahmad, a former union minister.
Kunhalikutty, a former minister in the state government and the top leader of the Muslim League that is a major player in the state politics beat MB Faisal of (CPI-M). Reports suggest that Kunhalikutty won from all the seven assembly constituencies of Kondotty, Manjeri, Perinthalamann, Mankada, Malappuram, Vengara and Vallikkunnu.
BJP that has been working hard to create a toehold in the state fared very badly and came a distant third. Right now Kunhalikutty is an MLA and represents Vengara constituency. A total of 71.33% voters had exercised their franchise in the bypoll against the 71.11% recorded in the previous election here. Of the total 13,12,693 electorate, 9,36,315 people including 4,93,433 women exercised their franchise. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Ahamed had won the seat by a margin of 1,94,739 votes against CPI(M)’s PK Sainaba.
