The 16-year old girl was fasting for the Muslims’ holy month of Ramadan for more than three weeks now was found dead close to the mosque in northern Virginia, where she had gone to offer prayers on Sunday.
Now officials have claimed that the murder of the girl was not the consequence of hate crime, and that they are not investigating the crime as such.
Nabra Hassanen of Reston, Va.’s killer has been recognized by authorities as 22-year-old Darwin A. Martinez Torres. Reports suggest that Nabraand four other teenagers had apparently offered the morning prayers as All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) mosque in Sterling, Va., on Sunday to get breakfast at an IHOP a little more than a mile away. From there the kids were going back back to the mosque when they got into a dispute with a man in a car.
Authorities claim that 22-year old Darwin Martinez Torres is being held in the death of Nabra Hassanen. A report by Washington Post claims that the girls ran to the mosque, but the victim was not with them. Later, she was told to be missing and police started searching for her using a police helicopter.
It was in the midst of the search that the police officer apprehended Torres, who was arrested as a suspect in Hassanen’s disappearance. Later, authorities claim to have found the dead body of the girl in a nearby pond around 3 p.m. that day.
While talking to the media, the co-chair of ADAMS, Shoyeb Hassan that during the last 10 days of Ramadan, that have great religious importance among the Muslims throughout the world “the mosque has extra prayers at midnight and 2 a.m., and members frequently go to McDonald’s or the 24-hour IHOP to eat before they start their fast at sunrise, as Nabra and her friends were doing.”
The teenager’s grieving mother Sawsan Gazzar said her daughter had borrowed an abaya from her to wear to Ramadan services at the mosque on Saturday night, as she “wasn’t ordinarily religiously observant”.
When asked why she might have been targeted, her mother said, “I think it had to do with the way she was dressed and the fact that she’s Muslim…Why would you kill a kid? What did my daughter do to deserve this?”
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe while condoling the death of the teenager said, “Dorothy & I are heartbroken over this senseless act of violence. We are praying for Nabra’s family & ADAMS Community.” U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia said in a statement: “We are heartbroken and horrified by the news of the brutal murder of a beautiful 17-year old girl. We know there is no greater pain for any parent and Chip and I extend our prayers to her family and loved ones at this difficult time and the entire ADAMS Center community.”
Torres is being charged with murder. Police have cited road rage for the motive of the crime. He was arraigned on June 19, 2017. A judge denied bail pending a July 19, 2017 court appearance. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have put a detainer on him, stating he’s a citizen of El Salvador and that there’s probable cause to believe he lacks permission to be in the United States.
