The Samajwadi Party infighting has been rather very confusing for Muslims in the state. The father/ son duo of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav have been talking of splitting the party without actually doing it.
Muslims who make 20 percent of the state population have seen as to how they lost badly in the parliamentary elections in the state when not a single Muslim was elected to the parliament from 80 constituencies of the state. Going by their numbers, there should have been 16 MPs from the community elected to the Parliament. But not a single Muslim was elected to the Parliament in an election that brought the BJP to power at the center.
Now as the election is slated to be held in the state next month, Muslims are finding them rather very confused. They seem to be torn between different political parties vying for their votes. Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party are all trying to gain their attention and get their votes in the forthcoming elections.
Muslims are angry with the Samajwadi Party due to the fact that despite garnering Muslim votes and forming the government on the strength of their complete support, the party didn’t fulfill a single promise made to the community. Samajwadi Party had promised to give reservation to the Muslims in UP if it was able to form the government in the state in 2012 elections. Now when five years are complete and the state is going to poll next month, the Samajwadi Party didn’t do anything to fulfill its promise.
Muslims are not going to sit idle and vote for the party once again. Muslims are saying that the latest drama of a split in the party is nothing but something to confuse Muslims. Muslim observers claim that Samajwadi party is in cahoots with the BJP to confuse the community to divide Muslim votes and lead to a BJP win in the state.
A Muslim political activist while writing in a Muslim discussion forum says, “BJP and Mulayam Singh Yadav are hand in gloves to sabotage any unity among Secular Forces .They have hatched the strategy to make Muslims vote become irrelevant by continuing flip flop on unity in the two factions of SP”.
He goes on to add, “Netaji has been advised to continue to take U – Turns at least twice a day .Mulayam Singh is talking of unity just to sabotage any alliance Akhilesh wants to make with any other Party specially Congress. Now there is no ground for unity as feud is not family one as is being projected but ideological. Mulayam Singh is at the end of his carrier having few more years for active politics. On the other hand Akhilesh is young so in case he makes any understanding with communal parties he will lose his massive support base forever. For his political survival he has to identify himself with secularists”.
