ViewsHeadlines Desk,

New Delhi: Many people were heaping praise on Narendra Modi government when it announced on the New Year Eve that pregnant and lactating women will be given Rs 6000 financial assistance. The government had announced the launch of a maternity benefit scheme in a typical grand fashion.

Now it transpires that government has decided to drastically change and limit the scheme. The financial assistance will be provided in the case of first pregnancy only. The scheme had claimed that the proposed assistance will be provided to a woman in case of two children. But now the scheme seems to have been cut by half.

The news that filtered out from the Women and Child Development Ministry is certain to give a tough time to many people who were expecting to receive the benefits.

The union government has also slashed the funding for the scheme. Now, instead of providing 60 percent assistance, it will provide only 50 percent assistance, while the state will have to bear half of the burden.

Indian Express, while quoting a ministry official said, “Following discussions with the PMO, we are in the process of preparing the Cabinet note for the implementation of the scheme. Considering the amount allotted for the scheme in the Budget, we have been told that the money should be provided to the mother only in case of the first child”.
