Eight people were killed in a reckless shooting incident that left the entire population shocked. Reports suggest that one of the victims of the shooting had recently divorced the man who eventually killed all the eight people on the spot.
The woman who has been identified as Meredith Lane was reportedly shot dead at her own house in Plano. She had reportedly invited her friends and family members to watch the match between Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.
27-year-old Texas woman was fatally shot along with seven of her friends when her estranged husband opened fire at a football watch party Sunday at her Plano home, her family says.
The shooter has been identified as Spencer Hight, the ex husband of Meredith Lane Hight. The 27-year old woman had reportedly filed for divorce from the gunman in July. Her mother says that it was around 8 p.m., when Spencer Hight became involved in an argument at the home, which he and his ex wife co-owned. Police say that Spencer Hight shot as many as nine people, including his wife. Only one lucky person who was shot during the rampage survived. The shooter was also fatally shot when police arrived.
A report by the Dallas Morning News claims that the woman filed for divorce from Spencer Hight, 32, this summer and that the case was pending as of Monday, their sixth wedding anniversary. A Facebook page for Hight showed him making references to his “ex-wife” since April, including saying that people with red hair, as Lane did earlier this year, are “soulless” and instructions for “when your ex-wife is choking” that show a woman being slammed to the ground.
While talking about the incident, Police Chief Greg Rushin says, “They were having a cookout that afternoon and they were getting prepared to watch the Cowboys football game. There was a party at the residence. Any time you have a homicide it’s disturbing, and certainly when you have this many, we’ve never seen anything like this in our city before. Many times you do see family violence situations that occur in many cities across the country, and those can become very volatile very quickly.”
Meredith Hight who belonged to Georgia, studied applied mathematics at the University of Texas at Dallas. She attended the college from 2008 to 2013. Her husband also attended the same university. While in school, Meredith Hight worked as a restaurant manager at Raising Cane’s. After leaving that job, she ran an online business for a period of time, selling products for the company It Works, according to her Instagram account.
Meantime a few other people who were shot dead yesterday have been identified. One of them has been identified as Darryl Hawkins. His friends became suspicious when he didn’t come for work. “Little by little I started connecting pieces and unfortunately, it led me here. It led me here to find out that he’s not with us anymore,” his friend, Zully Romo, said. Hawkins worked as a sales consultant at an Acura dealership in Plano. Romo said his personality brought people together.
In the meantime another victim has been identified as Tony Cross. “My nephew was killed in the Plano shooting last night. Please keep his family in your prayers. His name was Tony Cross,” wrote Allen Richards, of Pasadena on Facebook. Cross’s online resume shows he was a motion capture animator, who worked on video games and commercial ads. Friends posting online remember him for being loud, loyal, and almost always cheerful.
