There is no denying that the Dirty Dancing, the musical remake of the iconic movie Dirty Dancing evokes two very different impressions from viewers. While there are people who enjoyed it thoroughly, others are heaping scorn on the TV movie, its makers and the actors who are part of it. This is understandable and not many people are amused by the scorn that musical remake actually received.
What is clear by now that there is not much difference between the two movies as far as the storyline goes. Nonetheless, there is a slight difference in the movie synopsis, besides there minor twists in the story to make the film rather more exciting for the people who were smitten by the original movie.
One thing that must be kept in mind is the fact that most people don’t really like to see a remake. And even if they see, they inevitably compare it with the film that they had seen and liked. The remake, mostly doesn’t excite the fans of the original movie.
Abigail Breslin as Baby
Abigail Breslin plays among the most important roles in the remake. Breslin actually plays the crucial role of Baby, who was originally played by Jennifer Grey. Grey will always be remembered for her role in Dirty Dancing released in 1987, for which she earned a Golden Globe Award nomination. She is also known for her 2010 victory in season eleven of the American version of Strictly Come Dancing. Grey is the daughter of Academy Award–winning actor Joel Grey and former actress/singer Jo Wilder. Grey currently stars in the Amazon Studios comedy series Red Oaks. Meanwhile, Breslin is known for her roles in Signs and Little Miss Sunshine. She has even been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Breslin is reportedly dating Bates Motel star Freddie Highmore.
Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle
Many people who saw the original film and fell in love with it and most of the characters in the film, it’s hard to believe for them that anyone could play the role of Johnny Castle besides original actor Patrick Swayze. Sadly, Swayze died too soon, passing away at the age of 57 in 2009 from pancreatic cancer. In his acting career, Swayze was known for other films in addition to Dirty Dancing, from Ghost to The Outsiders. As for the new Johnny Castle, the role is played by newcomer Colt Prattes, who is an actor, dancer and singer. Prattes has appeared on many musical production tours and gained recognition for his performance in P!nk’s hit music video “Try.”
Debra Messing – Marjorie Houseman
Debra Messing is a great actor and has played many prominent roles in the past. She is known for her many television roles, most notably her eight-year run playing Grace Adler on the NBC sitcom Will & Grace. She has been signed to play Baby’s devoted mother and meticulous Houseman family housewife. She’s most known for her work in TV, which has included The Starter Wife and her current show, The Mysteries of Laura. But, the role that will have the most impact on her performance in the Dirty Dancing remake is her part on the too-short-lived musical Smash.
Nicole Scherzinger – Penny
