Malyalam actress gang raped in Kerala’s Kochi, film fraternity aghast
Kochi: The rape of a leading Malayalam actress has shocked the entire country. The God’s own country, as the southern state of Kerala is known, is getting adverse media. There are reports that the actress’ rape in a moving car is not the lone incident showing the deteriorating law-and order situation in the state, there are innumerable other instances too.
Reports suggest that an award-winning Malayalam actress, who has made name in Telgu and Tamil cinema too, was gang-raped by four men in a moving car. Though initially, it was called a case of molestation and even the actor’s name was mentioned, later rape charges were slapped too as the medical examination of the actress confirmed sexual assault.
It is said that her old driver who was sacked by the actress a few months earlier, connived with the driver of the car in which she was travelling for shooting of her next film and finally abducted her.
Officials claim that the incident occurred late on Friday. “A total of seven accused, including Sunil Kumar, have been found involved in the act during our probe. We’ve taken four into custody for interrogation. Martin was arrested as he was found to have made over 40 phone calls and sent several text messages to Kumar while picking up the actress,” police said. The actress was heading to the city from her house in Thrissur for film work when the gang intercepted her car at around 8.30 pm.
A top police official in the state went on to add, “The actress was travelling in an Audi car. The gang followed her in a tempo traveller and hit her vehicle from behind in what at first seemed like a mishap. Her driver Martin stopped the car and then two men from the tempo entered it and threatened him driver to drive. One more person was picked up on the way and driver Martin was asked to board the tempo behind”.
In the meantime, the anger is visible across the state following the rape incident. Well-known Malayalam actor Prithviraj says what the popular Malayalam film actress has gone though is proof of the state of security of women in Kerala. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Prithviraj wrote: “Woke up to the horrifying news that has by now been reported, misreported and sensationalized…I knew whatever I or anyone among our fraternity say, will only be fodder to click bites and TRP ongering. By now, all that can be said about the security of women in our matriarchal/matrilineal God’s own country has already been said…As a man who has to share the responsibility of a society that bears this shame, I hang my head,” he said, requesting everyone to respect the guts of the actress”.
He went on to add, “I was supposed to start work with her in a week, and she told me that she’d like not to come back in front of the camera so soon. And so is pulling out of the film. I know this girl. I know how brave she is. If it’s affected her enough to make her stay away from what she loves the most, I can only imagine how harrowing it must have been”.
