Kochi: God’s own country is in news, but for all the wrong reasons. One of Kerala’s leading actresses was raped in a moving car while being taken to shooting near Kochi. The incident has shocked the people across the state beyond belief.

Reports suggest that the award-winning Malyali actress who has done many Tamil and Telgu films was raped by her former driver who had hatched up the conspiracy with the driver of the car in which she was travelling. It is said that the incident happened when the 31-year old actress was headed to Kochi from her home in Thrissur.

It is said that her driver- who was hired by the promoters of the film in which she is working – allegedly connived to stage an accident before she was raped. Police officials claim that while they have arrested Martin, Sunil, the main accused, is on the run with four others. Sunil was the actor’s driver till a few months ago.

A top police official in Kochi said that “An FIR has been registered with sections of rape, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and relevant sections of the IT Act”. The actor was heading to Kochi to dub for the sequel of a 2013 film when her car was stopped at Athani, near Angamaly. “The actor’s car was hit from behind by a Tempo Traveller when Martin stopped the car, stepped out and got into a so-called altercation. Three men entered the car and started abusing the actor even as Martin started driving the car.

It is said that the four accused shot a video and clicked pictures of the actor while abusing her for nearly an hour en route.

While the actor’s name was initially mentioned in the media, it has been withheld as reports of rape spread. “Since sexual harassment is involved, the actor’s identity cannot be revealed. An investigation is on in this regard,” Kochi city police commissioner M P Dinesh said. The actor underwent a medical examination at Kalamassery Medical College and gave a detailed statement in camera at the Kalamassery magistrate court.
