ViewsHeadlines Desk,

New Delhi: Dr Mahmoodur Rahman, former IAS officer, who is known for his stellar services in different domains from governance to education, is battling for his life after suffering a massive heart attack. He is on life support and under treatment at Sahara Hospital in Lucknow.

While he served in different capacities, his stint at Aligarh Muslim University as its vice chancellor will be remembered most. He tried to bring the university back on track after it suffered badly in different sorts of protests in previous years. It was his no non-sense approach that helped the central university get back to academia and see steady improvement in academic atmosphere. Besides, law and order was restored in the university and people illegally occupying the dormitories in university hostels were forcibly thrown out.

There have been conflicting reports about his condition. As his condition deteriorated, the rumors of his death spread across the world. From university vice chancellors to alumni associations across the world, people expressed shock and grief over his ‘demise’.

His close relatives informed ViewsHeadlines that Mahmoodur Rahman was in Lucknow to attend the wedding ceremony of a close relative on Thursday when he suffered heart attack. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital and admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The former IAS officer who served as the chairman of Bombay Mercantile Bank for a long time was so popular at AMU that dozens of the AMU teachers wrote to the President to grant him a second term as the Vice Chancellor of the Muslim university. To be true, as many as sixty-seven teachers of the university in a memorandum said, “the university community will be intensely gratified” if the present vice-chancellor Mahmoodur Rahman, a serving IAN officer, is appointed for a second term.

The memorandum went on to add, “the list of good work done during his present term is long and impressive, but there are many unfinished tasks for which a second term is needed’”.

Mahmoodur Rahman’s report on “Socio-Economic Backwardness of Muslims in Maharashtra” is a major document on the condition of the Muslim community in the western Indian state. The report known as Mehmoodur Rehman Committee studied educational, social and economical backwardness of Muslims in Maharashtra. It also recommended measures to improve their condition.
