L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell announced the arrest of a deputy on charges of sexual assault. Deputy Giancarlo Scotti was taken into custody on Wednesday evening on suspicion of two counts of rape.
The news of arrest of sheriff’s deputy was announced by L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell in a news conference Thursday. The news of involvement of a sheriff’s deputy in rape of two women has sent shockwaves across the state and shamed the police department.
Latest reports suggest that Deputy Giancarlo Scotti posted $100,000 bail and was assigned to home on administrative leave pending further investigation. Despite his being arrested and on being out of jail on bail, he will still be receiving his salary. The charges against him are expected to be filed sometimes in October.
The sheriff said that the assaults were reported by two female inmates at the Lynwood jail facility. He further said that both the victims were in the same cell, the sheriff said.
While speaking at the news conference, the sheriff said, “Let me be clear that the crime of this nature is horrific…Criminal misconduct, especially criminal misconduct that preys upon a vulnerable population, will not be tolerated and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
