Lucknow: While ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) may be suffering from some divisions in its rank, the BJP’s boat is also rocking. And the one doing it now is none other than a BSP leader who was inducted by the party top brass amid unprecedented fanfare and was projected as a huge trophy for the saffron camp.
Following the superlative success in Parliamentary polls in the state two and half years ago, the BJP has concluded that it is its best chance to win assembly election in the state now. There is no denying that UP election 2017 is like now or never for it.
If the party cannot win a majority in the state where it had done exceptionally well merely two and half years ago, and where opposition is in disarray, the party may never imagine to win the state ever again.
Reports suggest that former BSP heavyweight Swamy Prasad Maurya, who was lured to the BJP fold merely six months ago to shore up BJP’s chances is looking for greener pastures. Maurya who enjoys significant support from some sections of UP’s Other Backward Caste, is reportedly very angry with the saffron party for not accommodating his supporters. There are reports that he can join Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party in the coming few days to further strengthen the young chief minister’s chances to retain the power in the state.
While talking to a TV channel about his rumored contacts with UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, the former BSP heavyweight said, “I congratulated him for his victory…He is a young and dynamic leader and a very good human being. We share a very good personal relationship”.
He also made it plain clear that he was not happy with the BJP leadership. “I am struggling to get ticket for supporters from my community who moved from the BSP with me” Maurya added. He was assured to be given around 40 of UP’s 403 seats for him and his supporters, including a son and a daughter, to contest. The BJP, sources said, is willing to concede no more than five.
