Mumbaid: Former Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has reportedly been sacked as the captain of IPL team, Rising Pune Supergiants. While there were reports that he himself stepped down from the post, nonetheless, the franchisee owners didn’t even make an effort to allay the rumors of his unceremonious exit as the captain of the team.
Merely a month or so ago, the former captain of the Indian team, who has led the nation to highest number of victories, had said that his days as captain are not over yet. When he said that, he actually implied that he was still the captain of a team and earned a staggering amount of money.
After giving up the captaincy of the Indian test cricket team, a couple of years ago, he stepped down from the post of ODI and T20 teams too ealier this year. To be fair no one saw him being sacked as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants.
Meanwhile a Rising Pune Supergiants official while neither confirming nor denying reports that Dhoni had been sacked said “Dhoni was consulted before the decision was made”.
Dhoni is in great form and it is simply surprising as to why he was sacked or even allowed to step down as the captain. May be it may have something to do with the team performance last year. In IPL 2016 the Rising Pune Supergiants finished second-last winning only five games and losing nine in a campaign ravaged by injuries to key players. It was the first time a team led by Dhoni failed to make the IPL playoffs.
Now as Smith has been confirmed as the captain of the team, there is euphoria in the team. Smith is the captain of Australia in all three formats, made 270 in seven innings at a strike-rate of 153.
