ALIGARH: Prof. Tariq Mansoor has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He is a university insider. He belongs to the AMU and his entire family has been a part of the university for the last several decades.
He is an Aligarian who will grace the office of the Vice Chancellor after a very long time. With his name being confirmed by President Pranab Mukherjee, the academic circles have taken a sigh of relief. They believe that as the new vice chancellor has been part of the AMU, he knows all the problems ailing the university.
Tariq Mansoor has been heading AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) for the last several years and is known as a tough taskmaster. He has been appreciated by many in the JNMC and the rest of the university as a good administrator.
Now as his name has been announced as the new VC of Aligarh Muslim University, one of the biggest educational institutions in the country, Tariq Mansoor has his task cut out. He says that his top priority would be to get rid of lawlessness in the sprawling campus of the university and maintain discipline in the university. He also says that he will get rid of all the criminal elements who are giving a bad name to the AMU.
Tariq Mansoor was confirmed as the new VC of AMU yesterday. An official letter received from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India; Mr Surat Singh, Deputy Secretary to the Government has stated: “I am directed to refer that in exercise of powers conferred under Clause 2 (1) of the Statutes of Aligarh Muslim University Act, 1920, the President of India, has been pleased to appoint Professor Tariq Mansoor as the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, for a period of five years from 17.05.2017 or the date on which he enters upon his office, whichever is later.” The letter further stated that the terms and conditions of the services of Professor Mansoor as the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University will be those as set forth in the ACT, Statues and Ordinances of the University.
While talking about his appointment as VC, Prof Tariq Mansoor says the responsibility is “huge” and he would ensure that students get a secure environment for their studies. Maintaining that there are only a handful of students who create problems on the campus, he said that troublemakers will be shown the door.
A major issue that he will have to take up immediately after taking over as new AMU VC of May 17 is the audit of the AMU regarding academic, research, financial, and infrastructural ordered by the UGC. Mansoor says he would ensure that all help is extended to the probe team and everything is done in a transparent manner. Mansoor said such audit can prove beneficial to the university also. “Whatever deficiencies the audit points out would be taken care of”, he said.
The new AMU Vice chancellor comes with long administrative and teaching experience. Appointed as Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, JNMC since September 2013 and also working as Professor in the Department of Surgery since 2002; Prof Mansoor has served as Chairman, Department of Surgery from 2005 to 2008 and as Member of the Executive Council, A M U from 1991 to 1994 and 2002 to 2008 as representative of the Teaching Staff. Prof Mansoor has also served as the Honorary Secretary, AMU Teaching Staff Association from 1997 to 1999. He was also elected as President of the Association of Surgeons of India (UPASI) 2010-2011 and became first teacher of AMU to serve in this prestigious assignment.
