New Delhi: Reliance Jio plummeted India’s established telecom companies with mere announcement of launching enticing data and voice calls. The announcement caused chaos and bloodbath at Dalal Street forcing the top telecom behemoths in India to go for a rethink about their market strategies in the coming days.
An annual general meeting can impact world’s third largest telecom market in such a manner was simply unthinkable. And that too by a company that is yet to launch its full fledged services in the country of 1.3 billion people.
As the Reliance Jio boss broke the silence on the tariffs for Reliance Jio, things changed from speculation to true intentions of the telecom behemoth. India’s largest private company whose chairman has remained India’s richest person unchallenged at the top for many years has said that it will not be charging for voice calls at all. To spice up it all further, Mukesh Ambani, during the AGM added that Reliance Jio will charge a tenth of what its competitors are charging for 4G data.
The Reliance chairman went on to add that his company will charge only 5 paise per MB, or Rs. 50 per GB. What’s more, the greater the usage, the lower the cost will be, and the rates could go down to Rs. 25 per GB. Ambani also announced that Jio services will become available from Monday, September 5, absolutely free as part of the ‘Jio welcome offer’, so everyone can try Jio’s services at no charge.
Reliance Jio is expected to get some breather to India’s internet users from existing service providers who have hiked data charges multiple folds in the last couple of years. Merely two years ago, Airtel used to charge Rs 100 for 1GB data. The company suddenly hiked it to Rs 255 all a sudden forcing many people to search for other option. With Reliance Jio’s entry in the market the price war will ensure some good news for data consumers.
While talking during the AGM, Ambani said, “Pay for only one service – either voice or data, not both…World over, operators charge only for data, voice and messaging are essentially free. All voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free.” Despite some rumours, data used on Jio’s apps will count against your balance. Also, on all plans apart from the Rs. 149 entry level monthly plan, you get unlimited usage of 4G data from 2AM to 5AM.
