Kayla Maher has been identified as the Yonkers police officer who was shot at Monday evening. While the female police officer has survived the shooting, that might have been fatal had the bullet hit a bit higher.
26-year old Kayla Maher received a bullet at her chin that entered from one end and exited from the other end. Kayla Maher has been with the Yonkers Police for the last two years and has been doing rather very well with the Yonkers Police Department.
Reports suggest that the Yonkers Police officer was brought to the hospital (Jacobi Medical Center) in serious but stable condition. Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner told the media that one of the two suspects was also injured, though it’s not clear if the hurt suspect was the previously arrested young man.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner went on to add, “It could have been much worse, thank God the officer didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries…She’s lucky to be alive.” The Police commissioner further said that the officer and her partner were answering a call about a suspicious car and when the two officers reached a small sedan near the intersection, the people inside allegedly opened fire.
Reports suggest that the injured police officer is the daughter of a retired NYPD Officer Susan Barry, who was assigned to the 52nd Precinct in the Bronx and the Central Park precinct. It is said that the firing didn’t involve one or two shots. Instead the gun battle is said to have lasted a full 10 minutes or even longer. Reports suggest that around 50 shots were fired.
Latest updates suggest that the Yonkers Police took both two suspects into custody. One of the men needed surgery after being shot in the exchange. He’s in serious but stable condition.
