After thorough inquiry, the gunman behind slaying of a police officer on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, France has been identified. Police claim that the man who fired at a police vehicle was Karim Cheurfi, also known as Abu Yusuf al-Baljik.

Police claim that it was a terrorist act and that Karim Cheurfi, also known as Abu Yusuf al-Baljik was a trained fighter of Islamic State, better known as ISIS or Daesh.

The attacker was apparently killed in retaliatory police firing immediately after he ambushed the police vehicle. Later, in a statement released by Daesh, the terrorist organization took the responsibility.

A report in the leading French newspaper, L’Express, said that the 39-year old gunman, Karim Cheurfi, was born in Livry-Gargan and lived in Chelles, Seine-et-Marne. Meanwhile, the ISIS report that claimed the responsibility for the attack on the French police named him Abu Yusuf al-Baljiki.

In a statement a French Interior Ministry spokesperson said that the police vehicle was “deliberately targeted”. The shooting was reported to the anti-terrorist section of the Paris prosecutor’s office, said Jean-Charles Brisard, a French expert on terrorism.

Reports suggest that the gunman had targeted three police officers who sustained gunshot injuries. But while one officer was killed, two other officers sustained grievous injuries.

It is said that the man who attacked policeman was armed with a powerful automatic Kalashnikov rifle. An eyewitness was quoted by Sky News as saying that he heard six shots reverberate through the air.
The witness was quoted as saying, “I thought they were firecrackers. In fact, he was hidden behind the van and shooting at the police. I think he hit a policeman. As soon as the policeman opened the door of the van, he fell”.

The firing created panic across the French capital with people scurrying for cover. Julien Courbet, a French journalist said that the panic in the air was unprecedented. The gunman had a history of previous crimes and had been implicated in firing at the police in the past. Reports suggest that he had recently come out of the jail after being released early in the case.
