MINNEAPOLIS — More details are coming out about the death of the Australian yoga teacher. Justine Damond, 40, who was also known by her maiden name Justine Ruszczyk was shot dead by a Minneapolis police officer this past Saturday.
Latest updates from Minneapolis Police department suggest that the woman was shot and killed by a police officer sitting in the squad car when he heard loud sounds. Two police officers were in the car at the time when the incident happened. The police vehicle had arrived in her neighborhood following a 911 call made by the woman who also worked as a spiritual healer.
The latest information was released by Minnesota police investigators who are looking into the case. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) while revealing the sequence of events, based on the interview with a police officer in the car said that the woman apparently approached the driver’s side window of the squad car immediately after the driver had been startled by the sound. The two officers who were in the car have been identified and their names released. The cop who shot the woman has been identified as Mohamed Noor.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension while revealing further details said that the officer in the passenger seat, Mohamed Noor, after hearing the loud sounds fired his weapon, hitting Damond through the open driver’s side window.
It must be kept in mind that the BCA has been able to interview only one cop who was in the squad car. This means that the information is based on the interview conducted with Officer Matthew Harrity. He was the one who was reportedly driving the car. Harrity was interviewed Tuesday, but Noor reportedly declined to be interviewed.
Meanwhile Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor is being condemned by locals who want stern action against him. The officer who joined the police force in town in 2015 is facing the flack for shooting an innocent woman, was lauded by the mayor and his fellow Somalis as a welcome addition to the force when he joined the Minneapolis Police Department in the year 2015. “I want to take a moment to recognize Officer Mohamed Noor, the newest Somali officer in the Minneapolis Police Department…Officer Noor has been assigned to the 5th Precinct, where his arrival has been highly celebrated, particularly by the Somali community in and around Karmel Mall”, Mayor Betsy Hodges had written on Facebook.

Other details indicate that the investigation in the case has been assigned to a state agency in Minneapolis. In the meantime, the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in a press release said, “Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue S. just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday…At one point, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman.” The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. The BCA stressed in the press release that the investigation was in its early stages.
