Justine Damond shooting in Minneapolis – Cops Mohamed Noor, Matthew Harrity

ViewsHeadlines Desk,

31-year old Somali immigrant Mohamed Noor is hogging the limelight for the last two days for all the wrong reasons. The man who joined the Minneapolis Police some two years ago is alleged to have shot a woman while sitting inside the Police vehicle this past Saturday.

The woman, an Australian Yoga teacher and spiritual healer, Justine Damond, was allegedly shot dead while she was talking to another officer who was also sitting in the police vehicle. The police officials had come to the area following a 911 call allegedly made by the woman, who had gone out to meet the police car in her pajamas.

Initially the officer behind the shooting wasn’t identified. But later the news was let slip outside the police headquarters in the town, though the Minneapolis Police Department hasn’t commented on it openly as yet.

Besides, Mohamed Noor, the other office who was in the vehicle has been identified as Matthew Harrity. Harrity is reportedly being mentioned as the Minneapolis police officer who was talking to the Australian spiritual healer and counselor, Justine Damond, when the fellow officer Mohamed Noor shot her through him.

Mohamed Noor, who is facing the flack for shooting an innocent woman, was lauded by the mayor and his fellow Somalis as a welcome addition to the force when he joined the Minneapolis Police Department in the year 2015. “I want to take a moment to recognize Officer Mohamed Noor, the newest Somali officer in the Minneapolis Police Department…Officer Noor has been assigned to the 5th Precinct, where his arrival has been highly celebrated, particularly by the Somali community in and around Karmel Mall”, Mayor Betsy Hodges had written on Facebook.

Reports suggest that the investigation in the case has been assigned to a state agency in Minneapolis. In the meantime, the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in a press release said, “Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue S. just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday…At one point, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman.” The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. The BCA stressed in the press release that the investigation was in its early stages.

Till now the BCA has remained tightlipped about the whole incident saying the investigation has just begun. Nonetheless, a report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune while talking about the sequence of incident says, “Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources confirmed. No weapon was found at the scene”.
