Los Angeles: Joni Sledge, the 60 year old band member of the Sister Sledge band reportedly died at her home Friiday. She was 60.
Since she launched the band, along with three of her very talented sisters, way back in 1971, the singer was an indispensible part of the band and had a long touring plan lined up for her and other band members for the next several months. Their last performance was in October 2016.
Till now Joni Sledge cause of death is not clear. She was healthy and was not facing any illness. The singer was very health conscious and hadn’t faced any serious health issue over the last couple of years. This was the reason that her sisters and close family members were all the more horrified when she was pronounced dead.
Reports suggest that the 60-year old singer was found dead by a friend on Friday, according to Biff Warren. Warren, who serves as publicist for Joni’s sister Kathy Sledge, told the media that more details would be available Sunday after he spoke with the family.
The group released a statement on Facebook and the Media saying, “Yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We are saddened to inform you that our dear sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin, Joni passed away yesterday. Please pray for us as we weep for this loss. We do know that she is now eternally with Our Lord … We miss her and hurt for her presence, her radiance, and the sincerity with which she loved & embraced life.”
The band was launched by four sisters in early seventies when Joni was a teenager. The band’s first album, “Circle of Love,” was released in 1975, but the group didn’t achieve major success until 1979’s “We Are Family,” which was produced by hitmakers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. Since then the group never looked back.
