Jeremy Corbyn has catapulted the Labour Party on top of the UK politics after many people had written its epitaph. Theresa May, the UK Prime Minister had called the election, hoping to increase her party’s majority in the Parliament. She had apparently not envisioned the loss that she is staring right now.
Her party’s majority is expected to shrink substantially in the Parliament and it is going to be a minority government, if it manages to emerge as the largest party in UK Parliament.
From being a fringe Labour leader merely a couple of years ago, to a major player in the UK politics, the transformation is rather super fast. The 68-year old Corbyn has served as Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition since 12 September 2015. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington North since 1983.
Corbyn’s views are no secret. As Labour leader, Corbyn advocates reversing austerity cuts to public services and welfare funding made since 2010, and proposes renationalisation of public utilities and the railways. A longstanding anti-war and anti-nuclear activist, Corbyn supports a foreign policy of military non-interventionism and unilateral nuclear disarmament.
Corbyn is married to Laura Alvarez since 2013. It is his third marriage and he has been previously married to Jane Chapman (1974-1979) and Cluadia Bracchitta (1987-1999).
48-year Laura Alvarez who is 20 years younger than the Labour leader is an ex-banker and reportedly met Jeremy Corbyn after flying from her native Mexico to be with her sister, Marcela who had been living in London with her daughter. Corbyn had been helping Marcela with a custody battle and through doing this he met Alvarez. At this point the Labour leader was single after divorcing his previous and second wife, Chilean exile Claudia Bracchitta in 1999.
Alvarez is not known to hog limelight. She tries to avoid it at any cost. In one rare interview she appeared in a 2016 Vice News documentary about her husband. In the film, she says Corbyn is “not very good at house work, but he is a good politician.” Alvarez runs a coffee export business Cafe Mam that sells coffee from Chiapas, Mexico and is “100 percent organically grown.”

Corbyn has said that he wants his private life to remain private. Reports suggest that during the ongoing elections too, Corbyn refused to have Alvarez join him on the BBC’s The One Show. While Philip John May joined Theresa May on the show, Alvarez wasn’t by her husband’s side. “I say to journalists: attack public political figures, that’s OK, that’s what politics is about. But please don’t attack people who didn’t ask to be put in the limelight,” Corbyn is reported to have said in 2015.
