Chennai: After playing cat and mouse game for the last three weeks, former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa’s estranged niece, Deepa Jayakumar, announced the launch of her own political outfit. The new political forum ‘MGR Amma Deepa Peravai’ launch has surprised many people as she was regularly seen at O Panneerselvam.
While it will take rather a very long time in finding out as to how long the new forum will survive, what is sure is the fact that following the marginalization of O Panneerselvam, some vested interests have been trying to prop up a third front. These are the same people who went all out to stall Sasikala’s march to power.
It was just some deft planning by Sasikala and her associates that this plan fell through and she was able to keep her flock together and appoint a chief minister of her choice. On Friday, late jayalalithaa’s niece, Deepa Jayakumar, launched ‘MGR Amma Deepa Peravai’, signalling her entry into Tamil Nadu politics.
While announcing the launch Deepa said, “My journey in politics begins today”. While many people were expecting her to work with O Pannerselvam. However, Deepa decided not to join hands with O. Panneerselvam. She and Mr. Panneerselvam had met together briefly at Jayalalithaa’s memorial the day AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala was convicted and sentenced to four years jail in the disproportionate assets case.
She further said that “‘Amma Deepa Peravai’ is the platform we launch formally today”. When asked if it’s a political party, she said, “It’s a federation at this moment and I urge youth to support.” Claiming she was sad at the ‘hijacking’ of the party and that Edappadi Palaniswami was not a popular choice, Jayakumar said: “This kind of hijacking of the party was not good. He (Palaniswami) was not the person people wanted as CM. There is a traitor group working behind the govt and we will work continuously to throw away this group.”
In the meantime in a minor reshuffle, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami named D. Jayakumar as Finance Minister. Mr. Jayakumar will now head the Finance, Planning, Legislative Assembly, Elections and Passports, Personnel and Administrative Reforms and Personnel and Administrative Reforms (training) departments in addition to his current Fisheries portfolio. He has now been redesignated Minister for Finance and Personnel and Administrative Reforms, a Raj Bhavan release said. Mr. Palaniswami was holding the portfolios allocated to Mr. Jayakumar.
43 year old Deepa is the daughter of Jayalalithaa’s younger brother of Jayalalitha. The family used to live in Jayalalitha home Poes Garden. In 1995, Jayakumar left Poes Garden with his family. He died soon after. After completing graduation, Deepa did a diploma course on Mass Communication from London. Her first job was with The New Indian Express. She again returned back to London where she got married to Madhvan and settled there. It is strange that Deepa has not cordial relation with her brother Deepak Jayakumar. It may be due to her marriage with Madhavan, who is a Christian by faith. Little is known about her husband.
