Jasmine Block, missing Alexandria girl escapes: Thomas Barker, Joshua Holby, Steven Powers charged

ViewsHeadlines Desk,

Jasmine Block, a 15-year old girl who had gone missing from her Alexandria home almost a month ago has made a dramatic comeback. The girl who fled her three abductors had to swim across a huge lake to get help and get her abductors arrested.

The girl, who was abducted by a family friend, faced most brutal sexual assault by not just her abductor, but by two friends of the beast as well. They also beat her regularly and threatened her with firearms.

They used to keep guard around her all the time, even keeping her inside cupboard on many occasions and then taking her along to a destination hundreds of miles away from her home. After keeping close watch on the girl, the three criminals apparently lowered their guard and went out to bring food. This gave the girl opportunity to try and sneak out of the captors’ home.

Reports also suggest that the three people occasionally tried to kill her. She gave the instances that once one of them tried to push her underwater in a bathtub, and another when a cord or rope was placed around her neck and she was forced to hang until she couldn’t breathe.

Once in the wake of her disappearance, police came to the mobile home and knocked at the door, but as no one responded, the police didn’t force open it. The police was not searching for her, but for some stolen property. Later the men forced her onto a truck and fled the area.

Officials claim that the girl who was taken from there to western Minnesota got a chance to flee when the trio went to get pizza. Yesterday, the three people who have been arrested since then were charged with multiple counts. Thomas Barker, 32, of Carlos, Minnesota, and Steven Powers, 20, of Benson, were charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and false imprisonment. Joshua Holby, 31, of Carlos was charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment.

Reports suggest that it was on August 8 when Barker abducted the girl from her home in Alexandria, about 133 miles (214 kilometers) northwest of Minneapolis, by tricking her into thinking he needed her to talk to his son, who was misbehaving. Barker was her friend’s dad, so she agreed to help, leaving her phone behind.

Jasmine Block’s mother Sarah J Block in a Facebook post said, “We found jasmine and she is safe. I will not be answering any messages or calls”. Sarah later posted a photo on her Facebook page of herself and Jasmine reunited. Later in another Facebook post, Sarah J Block said, “I just want to say thank you for helping for never giving up! I thank the law enforcement for being on top of everything working their days off not sleeping much etc for those that were negative shame on you! 3 people have been arrested I will not share any details as this is an ongoing investigation and I tell everyone to respect that. I also ask to respect jasmine myself and her sisters as we have been apart 4 weeks and its been alot so give space. The prayer vigil will still go on Friday to welcome her home. God answers prayers! I am so damn proud of her and so happy to have her home safe with us. Thank you all so much”.

On the other hand Police Chief Rick Wyffels says three people have been arrested for the criminal confinement and intimidation of an underage girl. The police chief said, “[Barker] tricked her by saying he would like her to come help with a family situation and Jasmine was already familiar with the other family members who do not live with him in that neighborhood…She’s thinking he’s trusting and honest, she goes ‘I’ll just go with you right now.’ So she gets in the car, except he takes her to Carlos and ties her up.” The police chief said that on many occasions the girl was pushed into a closet.
