President Donald Trump has unceremoniously sacked the very powerful Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey. The sacking has come as a shock as it comes when he was actively involved in the investigation of Russian role in the US presidential elections.
There have been hushed up reports that the investigation might have proved far too revealing for Donald trump administration to handle. Already Trump’s former National Security Advisor Flynn resigned under tremendous pressure from agencies. There are allegations that Flynn was compromised by the Russian agencies.
Trump said that he had sacked the FBI chief as the agency was losing its confidence. In the meantime, in a letter addressed to James Comey, Donald Trump said, “I have received the attached letters from the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of the United States recommending your dismissal as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation…I have accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately.”
If that was not enough, Trump further said, “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau…It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.”
Despite his sacking James Comey is not expected to suffer financially. At the time of his nomination as FBI director in 2013, the former prosecutor reported his net worth in Senate documents during the confirmation process to be $11 million. It must have gone up substantially as he was expected to receive $3 million profit-sharing payout from Bridgewater Associates, his former employers. Comey had worked as Bridgewater Associates’ general counsel from 2010 through early 2013. In the last year at his job, the former FBI boss was paid around $6 million in compensation. Considering his sky-high salary, Comey probably took heavy pay cut at FBI that was just around $185,000 per year.
