James Alex Fields Jr. has reportedly been identified by police as the driver of the vehicle that plowed into the crowd protesting against a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. The incident caused the death of a woman and grievous injuries to as many as nineteen other people.
The incident had sent shockwaves not just among the crowd that had gathered to oppose the white supremacist rally, but across the US, where dissent has always been welcomed and not suppressed.
Officials claim that the 20-year old man has been booked into the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. He has been charged for one count of second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding, and one count of failing to stop at an accident that resulted in a death.
Meanwhile U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions while announcing an investigation into the case said, “The Richmond FBI Field Office, the Civil Rights Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia have opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances of the deadly vehicular incident that occurred earlier Saturday morning…The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence, and as this is an ongoing investigation we are not able to comment further at this time.”
The woman who lost her life in the malicious attach was a 32-year-old woman who was crossing the street, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said Saturday night.
While nineteen people have suffered injuries as many as five people are said to be in critical condition. Four other people, in the meantime, have been listed in serious condition.
This was a horrible sight, a car plowing into the crowd of innocent men and women. Video footages of the incident showed a grey Dodge Charger plowing into counter-protesters who were marching through the city’s shopping district. The brute force of the attack was so devastating that many people were hurled into the air. Bystanders could be seen running in every direction while others stood by screaming for help.
