Michigan: This must be among the worst days for Indians in the US. As Indian Americans were mourning the death of a well known Silicon Valley techie Naren Prabhu and his wife, another Indian American doctor has been found in his car on a highway in Michigan.
Around eight Indian Americans have been killed in different shooting incidents across the US. The community seems to have become scared and many people tend to take a lot of precautions before going out. The latest incidents are going to make the level of insecurity among the Indian Americans to a new level.
Reports suggest that a 32-year old man, Dr Ramesh Kumar who belonged to Mavelikkara in Alappuzha, Kerala was found shot dead in a car in Michigan, USA. No one suspected anything till his family members became worried as he didn’t respond to multiple text messages and calls.
Reports suggest that he is the son of a renowned physician Dr Narendra R Kumar, who happens to be an ex president of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin(AAPI) and the Association of Kerala Medical Graduates. AAPI is a big organization. There are currently more than a hundred thousand doctors of Indian origin in the United States of America and they account for 5% of all doctors in the USA and 20% of all International Medical Graduates employed in the US workforce. It is noteworthy that India provides the largest number of International Medical Graduates to the US in absolute numbers.
A Times of India reports suggest that his body was discovered on Thursday night in the passenger seat of his car. Ramesh was a doctor in the Urology department of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
The news of the shooting and the death of Kumar came as a shock to his relatives. “On Friday at 11.30 am, we got information that Ramesh Kumar has been found dead inside his car. On Thursday, when Ramesh did not reach the hospital, a colleague called up his father. Then Narendra Kumar called and sent several text messages to Ramesh. But he did not revert. Following this, he lodged a complaint with the police. During the search, police found him shot dead inside his car, which was parked at a rest area on the highway in Michigan. His body was found in the back seat of the car. The police have not confirmed the reason for his death. His parents said they did not think it is a racial attack” a relative says.
Dr Kumar did his MBBS degree from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi. The family resides in East Grove Court, Freeland, Michigan.
