Houston flood emergency– death toll, rescue efforts latest updates

ViewsHeadlines Desk,

HOUSTON —This may be the worst flooding in the history of Houston, Texas. While Hurricane Harvey got slowed, heavy rains that it caused have created havoc across the Gulf region. Three cities including Houston, Corpus Christi and Galveston have been hit hardest as Hurricane Harvey fell on these cities as tiger falls on its prey.

More than two feet of water can be seen on highways, roads, stadiums, school buildings in and around Houston area. The sudden power outages that have impacted a large area around Houston has made things all the more difficult. A water treatment plant was yet to be made functional and power outage forced it out of action.

The situation was so grim earlier today that many residents of towns took shelter top of their homes and awaited the arrival of the rescue teams. Many such people were rescued by Coast Guard officials who plucked such desperate victims from their rooftops.

There is no denying that despite their best preparations –people living in the Texas Gulf Coast had prepared for the eventuality for days – but no one had thought that the hurricane will be so powerful and its aftermath so brutal.

Till now rescue teams consisting of different agencies have rescued hundreds of people in Houston and many more were expected later today as they await the arrival of rescue teams on their rooftops. A number of picture and videos showing young boys and girls with their mothers awaiting on their rooftops are doing the rounds on social media.

This condition is throughout the region. Between Corpus Christi and Houston — where rescue efforts increased as water levels rose to dangerous levels — many people feared that toll was only the beginning. Till now the scale of damage is not known as officials have yet to reach many of the affected area. Authorities did not know the full scope of damage because weather conditions prevented emergency crews from getting into the hardest-hit places. And they dreaded the destruction that was yet to come from a storm that could linger for days and unload more than 40 inches of rain on cities, including dangerously flood-prone Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest.

In the meantime President Trump lauded teamwork among the various agencies battling the disaster. “I will be going to Texas as soon as that trip can be made without causing disruption,” President Trump tweeted Sunday. “The focus must be life and safety.”

Officials claim that flooding was overwhelming the Houston metropolitan area and was only expected to get worse, the National Weather Service said. Parts of Harris County, Texas, had been hit with more than 20 inches of rain in 24 hours, much of it concentrated in the middle of the night.

The National Weather Service said in a statement “Catastrophic and life-threatening flooding is occurring in southeastern Texas, and flash flood emergencies are in effect for portions of this area”.

Experts are perplexed by such heavy rains. Jeff Lindner, a meteorologist with the Harris County Flood Control District, said almost all of southeast Harris County was blasted with 13 to 15 inches of rain in three hours. This is “worse than the worst-case scenario for Houston,” tweeted WeatherBell meteorologist Ryan Maue.

Mayor Sylvester Turner in a Facebook post said, “Even if there is a lull in the rain, STAY OFF ALL ROADS. Most streets and roads have mild to severe flooding. If you have water in your home, stay there. Escaping your home is a last resort. Call 911 and do not hang up, stay on hold. We must get your location info to get to you”.
