Heath Gumm’s death has shocked his colleagues and family members. The 32-year old Adams County Sheriff’s deputy in Colorado was killed by gunfire when he and his colleagues responded to a call. One of the suspects reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot the deputy in the chest before fleeing. Police reportedly apprehended the suspect from the scene, while the manhunt for two other suspects was underway.

Heath Gumm’s friends claim that he was an affable person who loved to take care of everyone around. According to his friends and relatives he was an easy going person who was admired by his colleagues for his sense of duty.

Reports suggest that Denver-area community is mourning the death of the sheriff’s deputy. For the last more than five years he was with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department. He had joined the department in the year 2012.


Almost everyone has been praising the 32-year old police officer. His cousin, while talking about him told Fox 31, “We hear so much today about bad and corrupt officers of the law, racism and excessive force. Heath was the antithesis of all of that. He was the kind of man you wanted out there protecting our streets…He was kind, fair, funny and friendly to everyone. He was a an amazing husband, son, brother, friend and officer. Our family is thankful for the outpouring of love for him from metro Denver and beyond.”

He was an avid hockey player and enjoyed the game throughout his school days and later in college. He was a regular player for the Fighting Nemos Hockey Club. He played as the defenseman for the team. In a Facebook statement his team expressed shock over the death of the team member saying, “It is with great sadness that we inform our fans and followers of the loss of defenseman Heath Gumm #17 who gave his life in service to his community. No words can describe how we are all feeling. Heath was not just a teammate, he was a friend, he was family, he was our brother. Deputy Gumm played hockey like he lived his life, full of fun, passion, toughness, and with a little bit of goofiness mixed in.”

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amanda Overton said that Heath Gumm was shot in several times in the chest by a suspect. She added the incident took place at 8700 block of Dawson Street around 7 p.m. UTC (2 p.m. EST). Two suspects involved in the assault were absconding, while one was taken into custody by the police. She added that the officer was responding to an assault in progress, and added the wounded police officer was declared dead when he was brought to Denver Health medical center. The suspects were described as light-skinned black males or dark-skinned Latino males who were wearing black-colored clothes.

Heath Gumm is survived by his wife, Natasha. A report in the Denver Post said that the sheriff’s deputy “grew up in a family of first responders, most of them firefighters. His father, James Gumm, is a retired West Metro Fire Protection District engineer”. Donations came be made to Gumm’s family through the Sheriff’s Department’s foundation at adcosheriffsfoundation.org.

Natasha Gumm, his wife reprotdly works as a nurse. While condoling his death, one of her colleague wrote on Facebook “I found out today that deputy Gumm was the husband of one of my fellow PCU nurses at Lutheran Medical Center…People dedicate their lives to making the world a better place, and lives are shattered over senseless acts of violence in cases like this. Devastated does not even begin to describe it. This is the best place to donate. Anything helps. 😢 We love you, Natasha!”
