Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa who suffered a massive heart attack seems to be in very critical condition now after undergoing a heart surgery. Former matinee idol who went on to hog the center stage for the last several decades has been in Apollo hospital, Chennai for more than two months now and not a single picture of the chief minister has been released by the party or by hospital authorities since being taken to hospital.
While hospital sources are describing her situation as extremely critical, her party leaders are still claiming that all is well following the surgery. The situation in the state, particularly provincial capital Chennai is very tense.
Despite the rumors of death on the social media sites, party reports suggest that the 68-year old chief minister is alive, though on life support.
Jayalalithaa, the six-time chief minister underwent an angioplasty surgery in the morning to repair her blood vessels and is being treated by a large team of doctors, including four heart and lung specialists flown in from Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Apollo hospital in a media statement said that the chief minister has been put on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane heart assist device). “She continues to be very critical and is on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane heart assist device) and other life support systems…She is being treated and closely monitored by a team of experts”, the statement added.
It should be reminded here that late last month the Chief Minister, who is popularly called Amma, was declared completely fit.
Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of people have gathered outside the hospital since Sunday evening and wishes have poured in from top politicians across the country. Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu has announced he would be travelling to Chennai to monitor the situation.
On the other hand Union health Minister JP Nadda said, “We have sent a team from Delhi AIIMS to Chennai. They (Apollo Hospital) needed doctors and we have sent them that. The government is doing whatever is possible for us. We hope and pray for Jayalalithaa’s speedy recovery”.
The party officials are still calling her condition out of danger. “Doctors informed us early Morning that they carried out the angioplasty and that she is out of danger. Only then we breathed easy,” AIADMK spokesperson CR Saraswathi said. Later in an interview with television channel India Today, he said the AIADMK chief was out of danger needed intensive care unit support.
